Anyone have an idea about where to pick this pipe up for cheap? We've been calling around for scraps without much luck.

This beauty made it to the Playa last year and was in for a pedal lift before this years return. It was removed from my shop area here in Portland OR. It was reported to be headed southbound at around 6pm on the evening of the 16th (Sun). I am hoping that it will show up in another expressive fashion and not in pieces in the back of a tweaker truck. It's one thing steeling the Target $89 special Huffy that has been chained to the pole for the 32 week, but to take something one of a kind. . . . .
Well back to the drawing board, this is probably telling me I needed to fix some things in the first one and to correct them in the new and improved tree bike!!!! (I will rule the worldMuwwhh)

So it's time to unveil my senior design project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison... the Hoopla Rack! It's a completely collapsible rack that transports hula hoops on a bicycle. I've written up most of the information at www.hulahoopla.org/hooplarack with plenty of photos. What do you think? This is only the first prototype (it's a bit heavy and pricey right now), but I think it's a pretty good start.

Thanks for all the input on what you would have liked to see in a hoop rack. I really took your comments to heart in the design process.

I did the maintanence on my trike, replaced one chain, lubed the other. lubed the cables, checked the wheels for cracking, took spare tubes (one for each size wheel, 3 total) and a patch kit . I even took spare hand grips and seat to gift. I still had one tube blow out 4 times. First time it was just sitting in front of our camp, and started hissing. This was the middle of tuesday, hottest part of the day. I figured old tube, hot day = failure. I replaced the tube, rode to get ice, and back, then around the block, and it popped. pinch flat? I went to a freinds camp, who has the same trike (so he also had a 24" tube). replaced it again, looking super careful for sharp parts etc. this time, we only went 1 1/2 blocks before major blow out, right in front of a bike repair place. He didnt have any more 24" tubes, but he took it apart, he looked for burs etc and couldnt find one either. I did find another 24" tube, we replaced it again, this time, rode all around the playa that night, again all around the next morning, taking photos. finally, during a dust storm, i looked out, and yup...flat again. same wheel. 4 times.

OK. no more flats. (this is a worksman team dual trike with added on decorations, so it is pretty heavy).

Anybody use solid tires? Any recomendations?

It will hold at least 8 hoops and be easily removable and well balanced.

I'm not going to sell it, I just want to spread knowledge. I've started a tribe for this purpose! Please post your ideas, as I know that I cannot do this alone. I'd love your thoughts. Especially bike related hints, as I've only started working with bikes this year.

tribes.tribe.net/hooplarack

Read more on my site! Let's make an awesome hoop rack, and bring hula hoops EVERYWHERE!
www.hulahoopla.org/hooplarack

Cheers,
Danielle

If anyone is in the LA area, and needs help constructing, fabricating, or designing art cars, I am putting myself up for hire for the next 50 weeks. I charge per hour, or on trade, and I can do chasis engineering, fabrication, welding, mechanical work, design, alternative fuel design and counseling and also paint and body work. I also am a good recource for finding cars, and inspecting them for projects so you don't end up with something that doesn't run. E-mail me with your concepts or Ideas, and I'll help budget them and get them underway. Thanks, Robin Banks

Hi Jay

I found your email address on the BM site and was wondering if you are still at this address?

If you are the same group I am thinking of I have met one of you two or three years ago. My friend Jeff and crew member helped you take your bikes out to the playa back then.

If you are not the same group I tell you why I am writing anyways.

A friend and Camp mate of mine is very pregnant this year and will still be on the playa. Her and her boyfriend bought a rickshaw type bike from a group on line. The box arrived torn and the directions missing. They are looking for someone who know how to put these things together and would know if there are missing pieces.

Are any of your bike people available to work on this. I don't know how much of a budget they have but all of us would make it worth someones while with what ever playa goodies we could give. Either a really gourmet meal on the playa (my boyfriend and I are novice chefs) or name it.

I use to manage the crew who work on the Man for the LLC and Jeff my friend still is a part of that crew. This year I am putting together the BR Philharmonic and have little time to do anything else on the playa. But for Melessa I would take the time to help someone else if I can in return for their help.

Thank you,

Shevaun Aka
The other is to get it.

Hello all, and welcome to the final draft of the "Critically Single" event info as it will be seen in the "What, Where, When."

The guide and rules are posted below the What, Where, When entry.

Critically Single : Speed Dating On Wheels! Detail
Description: Nothing is sadder than a tandem bicycle with one rider or a solitary bike crossing the playa. Join our Critical Mass inspired, speed dating/ art tour starting from Snowflake Village (the speed dating experts!) Get to know each other as we ride between installations, enjoy them together, switch partners, and ride to the next. If we have any stragglers after the event, we will bar crawl, on bikes, in mass, until you are no longer single, or until I pass out drunk and crash!
Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2007
Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
Duration: 120 minutes
Category:	Parades
Eco/Green Event?:	Yes
Hosted by/Camp Name:	Snowflake Village

Here is the scoop on how Critically Single will be run:

* As fast as people come in on their bikes, you will be assembled into teams of 8, four M and four F.
* You will then be sent out to tour 3 nearby Playa art installations
* You will talk to a different person on each leg of the journey
* You will impress each other with your enlightened perspective on the art pieces (you lucky people on the way back will get to talk about your favorites, instead!)
* By the time you get back 20 minutes later, each F has chatted up each M and vice versa.

*** Then you play the game! ***
Secret voting on a gameboard; the Red Pin of Passion for the one you are super hot for, and the White Pin of " sure... I'd date them". You can play both pins, one pin, or no pins.

We match people who choose each other. Winners get a prize packet and a blessing from the Snowflake Scepter on their union, whether it lasts a minute, a month, or a lifetime.

If you do not succeed the first time, try again! If you do not succeed during the speed dating, we'll launch, in mass, to find alcohol, mixing and mingling all the way. Remember, everyone riding with us is looking! So don't be shy! You are around kindred spirits who are just as crazy as you! ;-)

We may need volunteers to help for an hour each (two half hour shifts.) Volunteer benefits are:
* Exposure to the opposite gender. You will be helping the opposite gender, which will assure that you get seen by EVERY hopeful.
* After your half hour shift, you will get front of line treatment!
* You will get "I helped Critically Single" swag, thus increasing your hotness by an order of magnitude.
* If you do not get hooked, during the Critically Single Bar Crawl, we WILL pimp you.

See you on the playa!

Would it be better to bring an old beater bike, try to take it apart according to Southwest's guidelines, pay $100 round trip to ship it (plus getting a bike box from a store) and possibly not be able to fit it into my rental car?

Hey folks, I am inviting ya'll to check out Critically Single! (http://tribes.tribe.net/criticallysingle)

I'll looking for interested burning bikers for assistance brain storming this event. Low commitment levels by design. I hope to be the only schmo stuck with any REAL work for this event.

So I did some field research (Shameless Plug: http://tribes.tribe.net/crushlab) and some soul searching, and I have decided on a grand vision for the event that keeps the thing super light weight and chaotic, just like critical mass... people show up, people speed date for up to three 30-45 minute rounds, people ride off, who's left, we take drinking.

First, the problems to be addressed. Please suggest any others.

There are several problems with the event:
1. gender balance
2. keeping the crowd together (mainly important for point 4.)
3. knowing who to connect and when
4. making sure bike drivers get to mix with bike drivers but bikes don't get stolen or lost
5. stamina under the sun.
6. normal tandems, not so nice for chatting.

My method for 1 and 4 is this, people must show up the gender they wish to date, someone they trust. Straight people must show up with opposite sex, gay/lesbian people must show up with same sex, same persuasion. The trust component is important so that a tandem always stays with a person (not necessarily the driver) who is responsible for it.

People who arrive without meeting these conditions will have to hope there are free seats and must hope that the gender balance works out, or they will be left behind.

My method for 2 and 5 is 30-45 minute rounds. After these rounds the trustees meet up and exchange plans as to whether they are already happy with their selection and how to divide bike responsibility.

For 3, connection will be handled thusly between switches:

1. Straight people line up in two lines facing each other, opposite genders, just like a grade school sock hop. Gay and Lesbian people will gather in circles. It is important for the method of selection that people collect thusly because it will all be visual.
2. Everyone will have color coded cards specifying traits they exhibit and desires. Categories for levels of Commitment, Romance, Adventurousness, and level of Kink (C.R.A.K., because who doesn't like Crack?) There will be five colors for each. Black for none, red for low, yellow for medium, green for high, white for completely open to any other level. For instance, I would be C:White, R:Green, A:Green, K: Yellow. I would imagine that would be a pretty typical layout.
3. People size each other up for a minute, communicate interest, pair up, and then saddle up back on bikes.

The rides would span the distance between art pieces. The speed dating would happen between the pieces, and then general art appreciation, together, for a chance for something a little more interesting than what typically happens during a speed date. Then switch, then move to next piece.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi Kids!!!

CTP here - your formerly friendly playa bike repairman. Well I'm still friendly, but my camp will no longer be fixing bikes in the 3:00 Plaza as of this year. With the rising population, and wider net gathering Burning Man goers, the percentage of folks with entitlement issues reached the tipping point, and we just can't do it anymore. Don't get me wrong...80 or 90% of our customers are beautiful people...but as the overall population rises that 10-20% becomes a larger and larger number, and makes it so we can't continue to do bike repair, and have a good time ourselves.

That being said, we will be up there, so come find us and say hi, and sit in our shade, and have a drink with us...we just won't be in the plaza, and we won't be fixing your bike :-)

What does this mean in the long run? We don't know. There may be some other bike repair camps starting up. The ones that were new last year got slammed so hard by the numbers of customers that I would not be surprised if they picked another thing to do this year.

My final advice? Bring spare parts. And tools. And a pump. And either bring along someone who knows how to fix bikes, or go learn yourself. Bike repair is the kind of self reliance that isn't very radical at all :-)

ps - I'm still very much around tribe, and still very happy to dole out bike advice before the event. I'm sure TomCat is as well.

With the news that ByB will not be offering the public our gift of bike repair on the playa, it's a real good idea to take few extra things here and there to make sure your bike will be covered while out at BRC.

First and foremost though, you need to make sure your bike is playa ready BEFORE you hit the playa. Bring it to a bike shop, make sure the tires and tubes hold air, the chain will not rust through, the bearings are not frozen and everything turns and rolls the way it should. If you have derailluers, make sure they are functional enough to allow you to pedal in at least one comfortable gear. If you don;t have coaster brakes, make sure the brake cables are in good condition. This sounds like a lot, but most bike shops can do this 'safety check' in under 10 minutes, and give you an honest idea of what it will cost to make it playa worthy. If you have any questions, make a posting here or on the other bike tribes.
Maybe all that bike needs is air and a spare tube. If it needs a complete overhaul- something beyond meatball surgery to keep it rolling forward and stopping when you want it- maybe it's time for another bike.

If you bring it into them on August 25th, they may not be so helpful, so do you and them (and us1) a favor and take care of it now, like the first week in July.
Think of it as homework.

Between Burners and Kinetic Racers, and the occasional other Clever Inventor, there seems to be a steady demand for adaptors to install bicycle freewheels on plain round steel shafts -- or actually, I suppose, shafts with keyway, so they actually work.

We have found a source -- a bicycle oriented machine shop that has made these before.

Pricing depends on quantity. A realistic quantity is 100 pieces. I was quoted $11,- without keyway. The keyway would add quite a bit, and then there is shipping and whatnot. So, being grownups, we should probably brace for $15 - $20. I cannot afford to give away a Grand or two, but I can front the money and distribute them at my cost.

He usually bores them for ¾” shaft. That makes sense to me. But he can also make them for 5/8 and other sizes.

What would you want? Quantity? Bore size? Acceptable cost? Other considerations? I’d rather not be stuck with 95 of them to schlep with me to Valhalla, but I figure a five year supply makes sense.

Well?..... :-)
All my best,
Have a bike for two (or more) but no one with which to share it?

Well, I'll be at Burning Man trying to change that! This year at the man, I am promoting an event called "Critically Single"; Critical Mass meets speed dating!

Bring a tandem, bring a friend! (preferably to match your persuasion to TRY and keep things balanced.) We'll pool all our mass together and using a very scientific process (still under works in our "Critically Single" testing facility) we will pair people up for short dates! As people find pairings, just like critical mass, we will dwindle down to a critical few. When we get sufficiently small, we'll go find bars on the Playa and get critically drunk, and be each other's wingpersons as we try and get our last remaining massers hooked up.

Join the tribe and lets talk details.
http://tribes.tribe.net/criticallysingle

Interested parties who can help contribute, please join! I need some help brainstorming the idea and I definitely don't want to horde this idea for myself.

I just find having a bike a hassle. I like to travel light and hands-free on the playa. and I hate having to find a place to put the bike, lug it camp to camp when visiting, and wrangle costumes over it. Plus, my tiny hatchback doesn't make bike transport easy due to weight and bulk issues.

Pondering other possible modes of transport on the playa:

1) I'm thinking about inline skates with off-road wheels (I've seen these, but don't know much about them).
I think that could be super cool: your transportation is attached to your feet, nothing to carry. You can get around much faster. You can easily take them off, you can decorate them or kit them out, and it solves the Hunt For The Perfect Playa Boot. some examples:
http://www.skates.com/Offroad-skates-s/96.htm
http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Teen-Boy-in-Off-Road-Rollerblades-Jumping-Posters_i1502615_.htm
http://www.landroller.com/ I -heart- Apollo. :)

2) my bf is thinking about a motorized skateboard, which also has off-road wheels. Manual enough to avoid mutant vehicle classification, motorized enough to get you around faster. Also small and portable, don't have to worry about locking it up or losing it since it can be carried with you into camps. some examples:
http://www.motorizedskateboard.net/
http://www.motorized-skateboard.com/

I realize neither will work in mud, but then again nothing works in mud so I'm fine with that.

Any experience with either of these? or thoughts? or resources to read up on?

These thrills, spills, hills and water crossings have been described in photos, books, movies and journals worldwide, and continue to bring thousands of visitors to the area each year, to see it for themselves.

It's human powered engineering and art all wrapped up in the most imaginative racing machines you've ever laid eyes on! It's thousands of fans lining the highways, climbing sand dunes and cheering along shorelines for a 93-foot King fish, a 3 wheeled evening slipper or a yellow submarine. It's a festival of entertainers, bands and booths filled with souvenirs and race memorabilia. It's a giddy experience guaranteed to make your face ache from smiling so hard.

The race course is long and grueling, subjecting the racers and their machines to extreme stresses; some planned, others not. But not to worry, the racers are in top shape (well, a few are.) As for the machines, design is everything. Most make the best of recycled parts from bicycles and the odd riding mower, but many sculptures have over 100 speeds, and are built with top-of-the-line bicycle components. Still others have made creative use of old auto and motorcycle parts, even whole cars! No matter what they choose to use, they all have one thing in common; they are all custom built, one-of-a-kind creations. This relationship between racer and machine makes it easy to understand the pride they feel when (or if!) they cross the finish line. But finishing isn't everything. Racers and sculptures are judged on a set of criteria encompasing engineering, art, speed and their ability to "Ace" the course. While it's been called the "Triathlon of the Art World," it's also serious business; a major community-wide event that promotes good fun, creative thinking and charitable causes.
