This year I want to build a sturdy frame for the canopy for the quad.
Is there a square aluminum tubing that you can get corner brackets for
for this? Lowest possible weight a plus.
Advice appreciated.

Re: Light weight and sturdy tubing
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 1:17 AMThe main issue would be the price of the raw material and the price to weld it.
I think we need more info with regards to the design to see if AL would hold up, brackets or no. -

Re: Light weight and sturdy tubing
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 7:48 PMThe idea is a simple table frame, a rectangle with uprights
to hold up a fabric canopy and some lights.
Last year i built the canopy support frame out of tubing from one of those
$20 shade structures. You couldn't really lean on it and i want to.
Nothing strong enough for a sitting platform though.
Alco in Oakland for the tubing?
Thanks TomCat! -

retired aluminum framed patio recliners and chairs. all have bends, can easily be drilled and fastened easily. cheap as hell. heck, might even fit one tube into another (like a sleeve fitting) to get the lengths right.
double heck.... might end up even being foldable..... like a convertible car if you're mechanically inclined.

Re: Light weight and sturdy tubing
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 10:00 AMAlco would be a good place to start to price it out.
the folding aluminum chair material is way too weak to be used as something to lean on, but that depends on how high you make the canopy. If those poles are 6 feet tall, they will be prone to bending.
what about salvaging some telescoping tent poles from an old canvas boyscout tent? you could prolly freecycle the tent or just poles.
or old ski poles? Wilderness exchange will prolly just give em to you.

Re: Light weight and sturdy tubing
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 2:39 PMI too used pvc (3/4 in). since they have elbow's, they can be disassembled for transport and storage. I did reinforce the uprights by getting EMT (metal conduit for wires) that fit inside.
Since mine is painted maroon, I picked up some maroon duct tape to use to hold the joints stable. (yeah, its a bit messy to take of at the end of the week, but that pain is worth it being dis-assembleable. -
