whatever you do, with fur, flags, foil, flowers (oh wait, can't have those), fake flowers, felt, or any other f-word you can think of ... incorporate lights. Do *not* be another darkwad on a bike out there.

I'm wrapping my bike in EL-wire, and using electrical tape.

How well does electrical tape hold up on the Playa?
Will it melt away in a gooey mess? or will the playa eat it?
I hear the playa is very hungry this year.

electrical tape will make a gooey mess....on the other hand scotch tape works surprisingly well for attaching cool neon to things. Go all the way around the tube so it sticks to itself. It'll attract playa and possibly not look so hot during the day, but at night no one will ever know, and since it's clear you won't be blocking put parts of your wire.

wow, i would have never even considered scotch tape!

I was going to zip tie them on....but i don't want to crush the wire, or have it move or slide around on me.

        What do others use?

what sort decorations are you doing to your bikes, and how?

zip ties do work great. They don't have to be that tight to hold in place. I have not used scotch tape, but I have used clear packing tape, it works well. DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE. It will be a goey mess. Or at least if you do use it, be prepared for a nasty blend of dried glue where you dont want it, an goey glue everywhere else. Also, hot glue from glue guns can and do melt on the playa. e6000 is a great glue for plastics or fabrics. it will be permanant.

            Damn damn damn!
I went & duct-taped my whole bike based on another person's post... and wrapped that with electrical tape as an accent, to boot! Am I screwed? Other than peeling it all off & trying to deal with the sticky residue (something I'd like to avoid), what is the best fix for this? Go over all with clear packing tape to seal it in?
And I was so happy with my pink-and-black candy cane bike. :(

Wrap some feather boas and glitter with elmers glue and you'll be all set for the playa.
And be sure to have a basket with a planty hanging out of it!

                  beats being a dumbass.

and this is the thread where I usually shout "LEAVE ONE SPOT OPEN FOR A BIKE REPAIR STAND!!!" meaning that if a helpful repair man decides to work on your bike, it's handy to leave one bare spot on the seat tube, or seat post, where they can clamp to.

Since I've retired, maybe I won't yell that this year.

But it's still a nice idea.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

oh yea...and don't glue your cables down while applying fur and such. Don't laugh, I've seen it done many times.

oh that's a funny story from a friend of mine at a 24 hour endurance race.

See- she didn't have her lighting system on her bike for her 3 am lap so she duct taped the battery case in the bottle cage for a more secure fit- sometimes they get loose and rocket out in the rock gardens.
so she tapes and tapes and taps the battery to the bottle cage, round and round the down tube for extra security.

After a few descents she is in her tallest gear and decides to shift to a lower gear. She inadverdantly taped her derailluer cables so they only operated in one dicrection. She didn;t even notice until I pointed it out to her the next morning.

oh! one other note about scotch tape......after about 2-3'll want to go back and pull off the old tape and put on new stuff.....

but zip ties.....are actually what I've used on my bike, but I have used the scotch tape trick on other projects....the octopus in my profile is tape.

I am going to deck out my bike in all sorts of different color reflective tapes you can see them in the day time and they are colorful and sorta cool looking... and at night they help people see you by being reflectors... added bonus i have used it before on other projects and it peals off easy when ya done... wont turn into a gooey mess in the heat of the playa and the little bit of a sticky mess that is left over when ya pull off is easily taken care of by some rubbing alcohol you can get at any drug store........ and adding glow sticks and glow bracelets and neckles for the night time at well to make a colorful bright bike... think about adding some other stuff as well but don't know what...maybe some El Wire attached with zip ties.. or something... gunna throw on a small generator and light assembly so that i got a light to see by.... humm any other ideas....

Wow! Nobody asked or suggested that you look in the photo album. There are around 357 pictures in the album. I just looked at about every one the last couple of days. You might be inspired. I put electroluminescent tape on my forks and frame and covered the bike with green faux fur so that the fur glows. There are newly posted pics in the album.

i just got a new cargo trike this year and am wrapping a lot of it in EL-wire....but i do love having a "theme" for my bike decor. so, this year my theme is a pirate trike. complete with flagpole, compass, cardboard anchor, bell, ship's wheel, and lots of sets of "liar's dice" that i'm giving away as gifts. if you see me out there on the playa this year, ask to be kidnapped and taken prisoner, i guarantee it'll be fun.

i'll post pics as soon as the transformation is complete.
