I'm looking at two nearly identical bicycles to purchase for 2009. They are the same manufacturer, same body style, same everything.. except for the rims / tire size. Since I would have to order either one of them, I'm not able to do a side by side comparison.

And yes.. these were questions I had from research done AFTER I left the bike store. They are 2010 models and nobody has them in stock yet.

I'm just not finding any clear information on the interwebs as to what the differences are between these two set of specs. Would appreciate any advise or information.

Bike one:
Rims - Alez 1000, 26", single wall, 36"
Tire - 26 x 1.95

Bike two:
Rims - Alez 1000, 700 cc, single wall, 32"
Tire - 700 x 38c

P.S. - the only other difference is the body color, one is grey, one is blue - and if the tires are not a determining factor, then well, of course.. it will be the BLUE one. The grey bike is nearly playa colored.. and I'm afraid it will be blend in with the dust.... !!!

Thanks much!!

  • P.S.S. - I am a 5th year burner and this new purchase would be my THIRD playa bike. Gave the first one away to a fellow burner after my first year - a cheapo Target bike, which I believe is going to it's 4th burn this year! My second (and current until I purchase this one) is a beach cruiser - heavy, heavy, heavy.. and big. Too big.

New targeted bike meets all my playa dream requirements! I am just confused about the rim / tire measurement differences.

    • go with the 26" wheel- it's a wider but not as tall as the 700x38mm tire.

Some companies use the smaller 26" tire on smaller frames. Since you did not list the brand, or model, or frame size, it's hard to determine.

but always err on the side of a 26" wheel bike, rather than a 700c bike.

If it's a cruiser, make sure it's got alloy wheels, and other alloy parts to keep the weight down.
  • and to de-jargonize the spec, the rims are Alex. it's the same extrusion, but rolled for different diameter tires.

the 26" rim has 36 spoke holes. it is not 36 inches.
the 700c rim has 32 spoke holes, not 32 Inches.
    • And the actual spec differences between the wheels/rims/bikes:

26" rims have a bead seat diameter of 559mm.
700c rims have a bead seast diameter of 622mm.

This is the diameter of where the tire fits into the rim. Ultimately you want a 26" wheel for the playa, and it will probably he a better fit given the limited information you provided. A more important indicator of what you should get is the frame size, not the tire size.
