I need to fabricate a trailer, and am just asking for general tips and tricks. It doesn't have to carry too much weight, really a couple of hundred pounds at most. I'm most concerned with the axle set up. I'd love to use old mountain bike wheels with a through axle. How can I make something like that?

Re: Building a trailer?
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 5:04 PMUse the barrow wheels from northern tool if you want a one axle two wheel set-up. I have them on my rickshaw and they are simple yet strong. -

Tue, October 16, 2007 - 12:38 AMsmall alloy bmx wheels are lighter and what Burley uses. Easy to find.
You'll feel the extra weight of barrow wheels. -

Tue, October 16, 2007 - 8:02 AMHow do I put an axle through? What do I use? I've got spare mountain bike wheels, but they're all quick release style. -

Wed, October 17, 2007 - 10:36 PMI'll try to take some pix of my little trailer - I used front wheels, and mounted them in forks. Super simple, off the shelf and hella strong.
barrow wheels are a great option too. -

Fri, October 19, 2007 - 10:54 AMWhat'd you use as head tubes? I looked at that approach, but setting up the bearings and head tubes, started to look like a lot of work. I suppose you don't need it to move freely if you're just making a trailer though.....

Re: Building a trailer?
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 4:30 PMThere's good plans on instructables including for a bamboo trailer. You can also google bike trailer and get some pages on Mother Earth website where a guy explains how to make a trailer out of conduit.
Most of the trailer plans I've seen don't use an axle under the trailer. You bolt or weld on a couple of dropouts on each side to hold the wheels in place. MTB wheels are too big. Go to your local re-biker, re-cyclery, or used crap store and find some 20" front wheels. There's also a lot of BOB trailer wheels floating around but they're more like 16" I hink.

Re: Building a trailer?
Sat, November 10, 2007 - 10:18 PMGeneral rules of thumb.
Larger the diameter of the wheel - the lower the rolling resistance.
I built a trailer real easily by simply cutting the ass end off of two mountain bikes, and welding up a frame between the two.
To keep your trailer upright, you will either need to use two wheels, or a single wheel canbe used if it is attached to the bike frame with a hitch that will not twist.
a sidecar with one wheel is also easy to do.
later have fun
