post burningman bike maintence

1. dust off your bike when you dust off yout tent.
2. wash entire bike with simple green- frame, fork, wheels, tires, all other parts, both sides- wet with water, spray simple green, scrub, hose off. Let it dry in the sun.
3. straight vinegar on the chain will counteract the corrosion.
4. lube chain, derailuer and brake pivots with your favorite lube. WD-40 is not a lubricant.

5. Next week, ride it to the store for a six pack, some tomatoes and a roll of TP and reminisce about all the crazy shit your hauled all over the playa in 110 degree heat and a whiteout dust storm.

Or A.(1/2)v.2: Totally ignore bike (including broken derailer) and then a week before find this awesome bike shop on 16th St. (near Shotwell) [can't remember the name and it isn't on yelp] and have the whole thing ready to go in an hour for a very reasonable price.

I think he's talking about Don Rafas Cyclery on 16th. It's a total hole in the wall shop with tons of cheap stuff and does decent work. I wouldn't bring my colnago C50 lite int there but Sr. Rafa can make most burner bikes ridable for not too much money.

          That's it: Don Rafas.

And exactly as TomCat says, the place is great for burner bikes (it'll-run work for a good price), but nothing high-end.

They also had some good playa bikes for sale right before the event. As if they didn't know to jack up the prices during August....

I'm just going to neglect my bike and then camp with some cute boys that know how to fix bikes and ask them very nicely for some help.

Christopher, I think I love you, man! Finally somebody who knows the difference between a winch and a wench!

Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp fixed something on the order of a couple hundred bikes. We were overwhelmed for a short while -- until I went down to Center Camp and removed us from the bike repair listing. It all went very well, and I don't think the other guys in KSR Camp quite realize I tricked them into doing it.

For a while there, I thought Allen might get married to the sweetie who needed major wheel repair - and worked closely with him thru the whole job.

            It was wondermuss.

            More spare parts next year.

The 50 extra bikes we were gifted will help.

I like the "ignore it" plan, it's worked for me for several years. Of course, during my Burn preparations next year, I'll squirt some teflon lubricant on the chain and check the tires, but that's it. It's a playa-only bike, and it's been light gray for three years now. I think it used to be green.

Hosing it off will only screw up the cold cathodes.

I washed both my playa beaters this year cause I got tired of the playa getting on everything at home... again. Vinegar wash and soap n water. Maybe a little oil or wd or lube whatever. On the shelf till next year anyway. Gave away 4 bikes up there, delivered a couple hiwheels (score!) rode my own. Only had to fix 3 or 4 bikes for girls.

love you for posting this. i have been guiltily waltzing around my bike (which is still in parts in a dusty suitcase) and promising that tomorrow will be the day i tackle the resurrection. pbr worked for a good lubricant on the playa, but i don't think it's going to cut it here in brooklyn. this was the incentive i needed. tanks.
