Since I have been wanting to track how much moisture falls on the playa this winter,
thinking ahead to surface conditions, I got this report 2nd hand from the area and it is
encouraging!
"Wettest year ever! No, not sure about that, but in the three years I have been here, this is the most rain I have ever seen. It started snowing in October, and we have gotten a significant amount of snow/rain/sleet/ freezing fog (pogo-nip) ever since. It rained all day yesterday, and will again tomorrow. I have been on the playa many times to check it out, and there is actually standing water on it as we speak, not all over, but in different spots, which means it is moving and wearing down those dunes. The Quinn-River should be flowing out onto it very soon. I have never seen that! This is going to be a very good year for the Burn, nothing like last years impossible bike riding. Plus, I imagine we will have quite a bit more virgin-playa after all this moisture. Y'all remember what that is like, right? Nice, raised-up, crunchy crust, that definitely keeps the dust down. Dare I say dust-free? Naw, we ain't never gonna get that! But I see a much different condition in the way it is setting up already, so I feel we are in for a treat. 'Bout time! But we will see... "

Re: lots of rain on the playa this winter
Tue, March 10, 2009 - 5:55 AMI've heard reports for all 5 years I went and each time I heard:
- more rain, so the Playa will be terrible.
- less rain, so the Playa will be terrible.
- more rain, so the Playa will be great.
- less rain, so the Playa will be great.
The most logical thing I've heard is that it depends on whether it's freezing or flooded last prior to Burning Man. A flooded Playa that is allowed to dry and bake will form a hard crusty layer. A Playa that freezes while moist (but not flooded) will crumble into a dusty nightmare.
That said, I have done nothing to compare winter weather patterns to Playa conditions during Burning Man. I suspect that many factors come into play ... er ... playa.
Fuck you, I love you,

Re: lots of rain on the playa this winter
Thu, April 16, 2009 - 8:13 AMI live in reno, and have spend alot of my life searching out and enjoying the many playa's we have here.
I cannot say I have any scientific basis for this, only observations, but it seems wetter years always contribute to a harder playa surface. The wettest year I've seen in NV gave HUGE playa cracks 6-12" deep in some spots.
But, as said above, it really depends on the late season freezing (we just got some of that), and how much water is on the surface. If the playa is covered in water, we're good. If it is wet in spots, we got the stupid dunes to contend with again.
