If I remember correctly, a year or two ago, there was a post here that listed the parts inventory that ByB brought to the Playa. I do not quite aspire to replace ByB, but that list could be useful when I prepare for 2009. Lots of 26" tubes and tires -- sure. But I would like to have the less obvious things also. For example, in 2007 we were surprised at how many crank arms were falling off cranks, and we did not have enough of those special bolts and nuts. Suggestions? CTP, are you around?
By the way, Merry Christmas to all!

Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Mon, December 22, 2008 - 11:08 AMextra crank bearings, for the cheapo cranks. I saw 3 sets go down last year and didn't have the bearings to properly fix them. I have lots of tools for mt bikes but most people seem to bring 'cheap' bikes so most of them are pretty worthless. My cahink tool was also used quite a bit. -

Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Mon, December 22, 2008 - 1:44 PMTomcat, that would be great. It's the "other stuff" I'm looking for -- things I might fail to think of.
In 2007, we spent a lot of time rummaging thru a big box of "junk" that I had brought "for no good reason" -- and we often found what we needed! It would be nice to improve on that (lack of) system.
Amusing anecdote: It may seem trivial, but one of the most important parts I dug out of that box was a tiny nut that was needed on a luggage rack. I know, I know! LOL But it was important to the very sweet middle-aged lady who owned the bike, and that made it important to me.
Crank bearings, you bet.
I'm not setting up any big shop -- not this year, anyway. At least two big shops have burned out (pun? :) ) doing that. And I think 2007 was my one-and-only shot at gathering a team of skilled mechanics -- most of them got to hear enough "techno" for one lifetime. (To be sure, they were all glad they participated that one year.)
What I'm planning is a one man mobile shop. I want to install tools and parts on the back of one of my Kinetic vehicles. That way, I won't be stuck in camp all week. I've been missing out on too much Stuff all over BRC. So I'm planning to set up the bus in a quiet neighborhood and go back there mostly just to shower and sleep. What do you think?
What's a "cahink" tool?

Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Mon, December 22, 2008 - 2:28 PMLOL chain tool. wow how did i come up with that spelling? -

Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Mon, December 22, 2008 - 5:27 PMLOL! My fingers do the same sort of thing every day! Just wanted to be sure. Oh yes, I have several chian tolls.
But I've never been entirely comfortable using a chain tool. I'm always scared to push the pin too far out and not get it back in. Anybody have experience with snap-together master links? Yes, I mean the flush ones for derailer chain. There are at least two kinds; one that consists of two identical halves that lock at both ends, and one that resembles a three piece master link but flexes into place instead of having a clip. Anybody?

Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Tue, December 23, 2008 - 9:43 AMThats part of the fun of using a chain tool!
The snap together ones seem to work fine, assuming they are the right ones for the chain size. I've used them on my ice cream bike and my mtb and never had any problem. -

A little practice and you will have the chain tool thing down. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Mon, January 26, 2009 - 8:10 PMHey all:
I finally dug out the list of parts ByB went to Burningman 2006 with! It's not complete- this does not include the stash hhat CTP, Scarabic, myself and a couple of others brought out
Parts for Burningman 2006:
- 250 tubes 26x1.5-1.9 SV
- 10 tubes 26x1 3/8
- 10 tubes 27x1 ¼
- 10 tubes 24x1.5-1.9
- 10 tubes 20x1.95
- 2 boxes of 100 Rema patches
- 50 tubes of 5 or 10g rema glue
- Random pedals- takeoffs from the LED pedals we sell?
- 20 universal brake cables
- 10 pairs of cheapo tire levers
- 50 Kenda reflective tires 26x1.95
- Random wheels? From the defecto pile?
- 5 prs of random grips
- 5 random saddles
- 10 left crankarms
- 20 Z51 chains
- 20 #410 chains ½ x 1/8”
- 50 master links ½ x 1/8”
- Card of 20 summit road brake pads
- box of 50 diacompe canti brake pads
- 20 sets of Summit V brake pads?
- Box of on guard lights, stripped of packaging
- Duct tape
- Veggie based Rock n Roll lube- the secret sauce
- Degreaser?
- Rags
- 1 box of 50prs Nitrile gloves
We never used the lube. I lived in the nitrile gloves and often TIG welding gloves.
Tools-
I brought out my service box (Pro level mechanics tool kit from Pedros- itls got all this: pedros.com/products_tools.htm), repair stand, 2 floor pumps, table.
CTP brought 3 repair stands, 2 tool boxes, 2 small parts boxes (crank bolts, lug nuts, etc), air compressor, MIG welder, floor pump, 2 work benches.
Scarabic had his tool box and and repair stand.
2 other mechanics showed up, one with tools, the other we graciously allowed to use our tools when necessary.
With chain tools, I have used the pedros dlx tool for years without anything going wrong with it. cheapo rivolis are cheap. If they break they are cheap. I usu spin the handle 3-4 times when I contact the pin, then slowly give it another spin or 2, always checking to see if the chain can be seperated at that point. It's impossible to re-assemble the chain with the pins driven through. Once you get the hang of it- pushing the pin just enough- you can be more efficient. Int he mean time, take it slowly, drive the pin through 1/2 turn at a time, stopping, flexing the chain to see if it can be seperated.

Tue, January 27, 2009 - 9:27 AMElliot, your camp was an *awesome* place to camp in 2007! and ByB was also an excellent bike+BM experience the two years prior... :) -

Re: Parts inventory for BRC repair shop?
Tue, January 27, 2009 - 10:22 AMTom, thanks a million!
Jay, and everyone, the 2007 Kinetic Sculpture Racing Theme Camp was a highlight of my life, even if I say so myself. I managed to recruit half dozen top Kinetic racers to come to Burning Man for the first time, and I doubt this particular magic mixture of highly creative people with great technical skills can ever be repeated. Our Placer, who apparently kept an eye on her charges thru the week, reported that we had an unusually high level of cheerful and productive interactivity every day from dawn to dusk.
One day, a stranger brought his own repair stand and joined our repair crew for several hours -- apparently just to be part of the magic. I still wonder who he was. Pure magic, all of it. :-)
